Texas, July 6 (V7N) — A day after torrential rains caused the Guadalupe River to overflow, deadly floodwaters tore through Camp Mystic and surrounding areas, leaving behind devastation and heartbreak. At least 27 people — 18 adults and nine children — were confirmed dead as search and rescue teams continued their work through on Saturday.
"Today will be a hard day. Please pray for our community," said an emotional Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring Jr. during a morning press conference.
The flash flood struck early on Friday, just days into Camp Mystic’s second four-week session. The Christian girls' summer camp, located along the river’s edge, was housing more than 700 children at the time, according to Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick.
Photos from the scene show bunk beds caked in mud, children's personal belongings scattered, and buildings damaged by the rushing waters. Emergency crews, including dive teams and helicopters, are continuing to search for the missing as families await updates.
The community is reeling from one of the region's deadliest flood events in recent memory. State officials have pledged full support as recovery and investigation efforts continue.
