Dhaka, Nov 11 (V7N) — Leaders of local political parties and social organizations from Bagerhat have urged the Election Commission (EC) to comply with the High Court verdict that upheld the Bagerhat-4 constituency.
After a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) at the Election Building on Tuesday morning (November 11), representatives from various parties — including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami — welcomed the court’s decision, calling it a verdict of justice.
Although the EC has yet to receive the official copy of the verdict, the delegation requested that the Commission refrain from filing an appeal against it. They said their meeting with the CEC was “fruitful and constructive.”
Earlier, ahead of the upcoming national elections, the Election Commission had revised the boundaries of at least 39 constituencies, adding one seat in Gazipur and dropping one in Bagerhat.
However, the High Court on Monday declared the EC’s decision illegal, directing that Bagerhat retain its four parliamentary seats while Gazipur’s constituencies be reduced from five to four.
