Gaza City, Nov 10 (V7N) — After more than two years of disruption, the United Nations Education Agency has reopened schools in Gaza, bringing back the light of education for thousands of children. One such school, located in an 800-year-old historic building in Gaza City, has become a new haven for learning.
Volunteer teachers have built classrooms on their own initiative, allowing children to return with books in hand, despite the ongoing challenges of war and destruction. The reopening of schools has instilled new hope in the hearts of the local population, symbolizing resilience and the promise of a brighter future.
Al Jazeera’s video report captured children smiling with joy, celebrating life amid the rubble of their city.
The UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education, Farida Shaheed, described the situation in Gaza with the term “scholasticide”, emphasizing that educational institutions have been deliberately destroyed and teachers targeted.
This historic school reopening is more than an educational effort—it stands as a symbol of survival, hope, and dreams for the future. Even amid devastation, education is helping Gaza’s children imagine a path toward a peaceful and promising tomorrow.
