Washington, Nov 11 (V7N) — Syria has officially joined the US-led international coalition to defeat the Islamic State (IS), according to a report by Qatar-based Al Jazeera citing a senior Trump administration official.
The announcement followed a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday (US local time).
Syrian Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa described the signing of the political cooperation declaration between Damascus and the coalition as a significant step for Syria, emphasizing that it will also help ensure regional stability.
With Syria’s accession, the coalition now has 90 member countries. Its mission remains focused on preventing foreign fighters from joining IS and eliminating remaining active IS members in the Middle East.
