Ukhiya, July 24 (V7N) — Hundreds of men and women gathered in protest on Wednesday in Monkhali village of Jaliapalong Union (Ward 9), Ukhiya upazila, demanding justice for slain Union Parishad member Kamal Hossain and expressing deep concern over the failure of law enforcement to arrest the suspects involved in his brutal killing.

Kamal Hossain, an elected local representative known for his popularity across political and social lines, was abducted and murdered on July 8 after visiting a local rural medical practitioner. His body was discovered the next day in a canal in Monkhali.

During the human chain demonstration, Jasmine Akhter, a local resident, said, “Kamal Hossain was a kind-hearted and widely respected figure in our village. He stood beside anyone in distress, regardless of the hour. We demand the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those who murdered him.”

Another resident, Khurshida Begum, added emotionally, “We still cannot believe Kamal Member is no longer among us. Not a single killer has been arrested yet. My brother lies in his grave, but the killers walk free.”

Abdul Monaf, a long-time resident of Monkhali, voiced frustration with the authorities. “Despite the passing of weeks, not one of the killers has been arrested. We are losing faith in law enforcement. If no action is taken, we will escalate our movement,” he warned.

Kamal Hossain’s widow, Hosne Ara Rima, tearfully shared the plight of her family. “I am now left with three children, living in fear. We continue to receive threats from the same group who murdered my husband. These are the same people who killed my husband’s two brothers—Zia Uddin and Jasim Uddin—years ago.”

She appealed to the authorities, saying, “None of the accused in my husband’s murder have been arrested. I want justice and harsh punishment for those who took his life.”

On July 11, Kamal Hossain’s family filed a case with Ukhiya police station, naming eight individuals and accusing 14 in total. Despite this, no arrests have been made.

Repeated attempts to reach Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Arif Hossain for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to phone calls.

The incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity and political violence in the region, especially targeting local elected representatives. Residents have urged the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure swift justice and protection for victims’ families.
