Natore, Nov 10 (V7N) — The price of coconuts has surged dramatically in local markets, leaving consumers struggling to afford this essential and highly beneficial fruit. Coconuts are considered vital for hydration and health, particularly during illnesses such as dengue, chikungunya, jaundice, and diarrhea.
Currently, small-sized coconuts are selling for Tk 120 to 150 each, while larger ones are priced between Tk 150 and 200. Local buyers claim there is no apparent reason for such drastic price increases and are calling for an investigation into whether production has declined or if a syndicate is manipulating prices.
Abdus Samad, president of the Upazila Anti-Corruption Committee, said that although coconuts may not be considered a basic necessity, they are crucial for public health and patient care. He urged the administration and consumer rights authorities to intervene immediately if price hikes are caused by syndicate activities, to restore normal supply and pricing.
Coconut sellers explained that they import coconuts from neighboring districts, including Natore, Puthia, and Ishwardi, where prices are already high. After covering transportation costs, sellers earn only a small profit.
Abdur Razzak, Upazila Agriculture Officer, attributed the high prices to reduced local production due to environmental and weather conditions. He also noted that improper care of coconut trees leads to reduced yields, forcing greater reliance on imports, which drives prices higher.
Upazila Executive Officer Mahbubul Islam stated that authorities will investigate the situation and take necessary steps to address any syndicate influence on coconut prices to ensure fair market conditions.
