Madaripur, Nov 09 (V7N) — The family of a young woman held a press conference on Sunday, demanding justice for her death by suicide, which they claim was driven by prolonged mental and emotional abuse. The event took place at a journalist office in Madaripur town, attended by the victim’s parents and relatives.
According to the family, Sumaiya Akter, daughter of Nasir Hawladar from Kismaddi Bajitpur village in Rajair, was married about a year ago to Zahidul Hawladar, the son of Sarwar Hawladar from Bharuapara village in Kuniya Union, Sadar Upazila. Although the marriage was supposed to take Sumaiya to Italy with her husband, Zahidul’s family allegedly obstructed the plan, which led to repeated family conflicts.
The family further claimed that Sumaiya’s husband took away her gold jewelry given at the time of marriage and subjected her to continuous mental harassment. Unable to cope with the abuse, Sumaiya returned to her father’s home. On the night of the incident, after a phone argument with her husband over minor issues, she reportedly hanged herself using a fan and her scarf.
Sumaiya’s body was recovered and sent to Madaripur 250-Bed District Hospital morgue for autopsy. She was buried at her father’s home on Wednesday evening. Following the incident, Nasir Hawladar filed a case on November 5 at Rajair Police Station against Zahidul Hawladar and five others. No arrests have been made yet.
After the case became public, Sarwar Hawladar, Zahidul’s father, filed a counter-case on November 6 at the Madaripur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court against eight individuals, including Sumaiya’s father. Concerned about delays in justice, Sumaiya’s family held the press conference urging authorities to take immediate legal action against the perpetrators.
The press conference was attended by Sumaiya’s parents, uncle Kalam Hawladar, maternal uncle Hiru Talukdar, and other relatives.
Rajair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masud Khan confirmed that both cases are under investigation. He stated that legal action will be taken against the guilty, and operations are ongoing to apprehend the accused.
The family and locals emphasized the need for prompt judicial intervention to ensure justice and prevent further tragedies stemming from domestic abuse.
