Khagrachhari, July 10 (V7N) – Days of unrelenting monsoon rainfall have pushed rivers in Khagrachhari to alarming levels, sparking widespread concern over potential landslides in the hilly district. The district administration has launched emergency measures, including mass evacuations, to safeguard residents in vulnerable zones.
Loudspeaker announcements are being made continuously in landslide-prone areas, advising people—particularly those living at the base of hills—to relocate to designated shelters. Officials confirm that over 1,000 individuals have already taken refuge in government-run shelters, which have been stocked with basic supplies and hot meals. Members of the Youth Red Crescent are on the ground providing critical support.
Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khandaker confirmed that more than 100 shelters have been opened throughout the district. “We are actively monitoring the situation and ensuring food and safety for displaced people. Our message is clear—those living in high-risk zones must move to safety,” he said.
Reports from the ground indicate minor landslides have already occurred in some locations. With the weather office forecasting continued heavy rainfall for the coming days, fears of further erosion and flash floods are mounting.
Authorities are also keeping a close watch on road connectivity, as mudslides could potentially cut off access to remote villages. Relief and rescue teams have been placed on standby.
This crisis in Khagrachhari highlights the pressing need for long-term disaster resilience planning in Bangladesh’s hilly districts, which are increasingly vulnerable to the compounded effects of climate change and unchecked hill-cutting.
"We are facing a natural emergency that demands community cooperation and immediate preparedness. Lives depend on timely evacuation and awareness," said a senior disaster response official.
The situation remains dynamic, with officials urging continued caution and vigilance.
