Mongla, July 21 (V7N) - Police in Mongla recovered the body of a newborn wrapped in a plastic sack from a pond on Sunday morning, following an emergency call made to the national helpline 999.

Md. Anisur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Mongla Police Station, confirmed the incident and said that they were alerted around 9:00 AM through a 999 call. Acting on the information, police recovered the infant’s body from a pond located in the Sattar Lane area of the Ratarati Colony, belonging to a resident named Maruf Billah. The body was found inside a plastic sack floating in the water.

Police completed an inquest and sent the body to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Authorities are yet to determine whether the body was dumped in the pond from a nearby area or brought from elsewhere.

OC Anisur Rahman stated that the investigation is ongoing and will take time to identify the perpetrator(s) and the motive behind this disturbing act. He noted that community assistance may be vital in uncovering the truth.

Locals expressed deep concern and sorrow over the tragic discovery. Some have speculated that this might be a case of concealment following an illicit relationship or social stigma, which tragically led to the abandonment or killing of the newborn.

This incident highlights the urgent need for stronger community awareness, mental health support, and comprehensive reproductive education. Many social workers and educators emphasize that parents must instill values of responsibility and open communication in their children to help prevent such heart-wrenching events.

Such crimes not only reflect individual desperation or social pressure but also expose gaps in the support systems for vulnerable women and families. As authorities continue their investigation, citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that might aid in preventing future tragedies.
