RAJSHAHI, July 5 (V7N) – A former leader of the Chatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, has been named in a case over alleged looting and intimidation carried out under the pretext of apprehending a Jubo League leader. The incident took place at the residence of the complainant’s brother-in-law in Rajshahi city.
The case was filed on Friday afternoon at Chandrima Police Station by Habiba Akter, who alleged that Mahmud Hasan Shishil — former vice-president of Rajshahi Metropolitan Chhatra Dal and younger brother of her son-in-law — led the raid. Several others were also named in the complaint, along with 8–10 unidentified accomplices.
According to police and local sources, on Wednesday afternoon, a group of BNP, Jubo Dal, and Chhatra Dal activists surrounded an eight-storey building in the Padma Parijat area, claiming that Rajshahi city Jubo League General Secretary Towrid Al Masud Rony was hiding inside. However, Rony is widely believed to be abroad.
During the standoff, district Jubo Dal Joint Convener Faisal Sarkar phoned Rony, who responded, “I’m far away. There’s no point in this effort. I’ll return when the time is right.”
Tk 14 Lakh Allegedly Looted
Habiba Akter claimed that during the incident, a group stormed her sixth-floor flat, threatened her, and looted Tk 2 lakh in cash and approximately Tk 12 lakh worth of gold jewellery — a total of around Tk 14 lakh.
She stated, “A mob was formed under a false political narrative to harass and intimidate my family. This was a calculated move.”
Habiba further alleged the raid was linked to an ongoing family dispute over property and wealth. She announced plans to hold a press conference on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
“Intimidation Was the Real Goal”
Mehedi Hasan, Habiba’s son-in-law and Mahmud Hasan’s brother, said, “This was never about politics. It was a planned operation to frighten us. The claim of targeting a Jubo League leader was just a cover.”
In response, Mahmud Hasan denied the looting allegation, stating, “Many people were present — police, journalists, activists. I did not enter any home. Instead, I was verbally abused by my elder brother’s mother-in-law.”
He further claimed that his family has supported members of the ruling party in the past and that the current allegations are part of a campaign to tarnish his image due to their financial position.
Chandrima Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Motiar Rahman confirmed, “We have received a formal complaint involving looting and trespass. A detailed investigation is underway. Legal action will follow based on the evidence.”
