Pabna, July 4 (V7N) — In a shocking incident, 21 human skeletons were allegedly stolen from a cemetery in Aminpur, Sujanagar Upazila, under Pabna district. The theft reportedly occurred under the cover of darkness in the early hours of Friday at the Birahimpur graveyard.
According to police and local residents, the discovery was made Friday morning when relatives of the deceased arrived at the cemetery for routine visits and prayers. Suspicion arose when they noticed disturbed soil and displaced bamboo grave markers. Upon closer inspection, they found several graves had been dug up and the remains inside were missing.
Local witnesses, including Faruk Hossain and Monirul Islam, confirmed that many of the graves belonging to their family members had been tampered with. “We visit the graves every Friday after the Fajr prayer. Today we found several graves dug open and most of the skulls missing. We believe a group of organized criminals stole the skeletons,” one resident said.
Initial investigations suggest that a criminal group may have exhumed the graves during the night and removed the remains, particularly the skulls. Such acts have deeply disturbed the local community, who are now demanding immediate investigation and arrests of those responsible.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Aminpur Police Station, Golam Mostafa, stated that police visited the cemetery and spoke to locals following the report. “We are treating the matter seriously. Although no formal complaint has been filed yet, efforts are underway to identify and arrest the individuals behind this,” he said.
This is not the first such case in the area. Previous reports indicate that similar incidents of skeleton theft occurred in the Khas Aminpur and Rajapur cemeteries of Sujanagar and Santhia Upazilas, respectively.
Locals fear that the stolen skeletons may be trafficked for illegal trade, black magic rituals, or medical black markets. Authorities have been urged to investigate all recent grave violations in the region to uncover possible links between these crimes.
