DHAKA, July 6,  (V7N) – The annual Tazia procession, a poignant observance of the holy Ashura, was held peacefully today in Dhaka, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), in the Battle of Karbala.

The solemn procession commenced from the historic 400-year-old Hosni Dalan Imambara in the capital. It wound its way through Azimpur, Nilkhet, New Market, and Science Laboratory before concluding at Dhanmondi. A large number of devotees, many dressed in black as a symbol of grief, joined the procession. Participants carried symbolic knives, banners, black flags, besta (a type of wooden pole), and bailalam (a type of spear), reflecting centuries-old mourning traditions.

Strict security measures were implemented by law enforcement agencies along the entire route to ensure safety. Personnel from the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), SWAT, army, fire service, and plainclothes intelligence officers were strategically deployed. Security forces were positioned at the front, middle, and end of the procession, with traffic police managing vehicular movement to facilitate the march.

The holy Ashura, marking the 10th day of the month of Muharram in the Hijri calendar-1447, is observed across Bangladesh today with profound respect and religious solemnity. This day is revered as "Holy Ashura" and is particularly known as the "Day of Karbala," a "mourning and heartbreaking event" of immense religious significance for Muslims worldwide.

Muslims globally remember the immense sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), along with his family members and 72 followers, who embraced martyrdom in 680 AD on the plains of Karbala, Iraq. They stood for truth and justice against the oppressive forces of Yazid. Their self-sacrifice at Karbala Maidan, aimed at upholding the great ideals of Islam – a religion of peace and harmony – stands as a shining example in human history.
