Khagrachari, August 8 (V7N) – Journalists in Khagrachari staged a protest on Friday demanding justice for the murder of journalist Md Asaduzzaman Tuhin, who was brutally killed in Gazipur earlier this week. The protest was organized under the banner of professional journalists in the district.
The demonstrators gathered in front of the Khagrachari Press Club around midday and marched through various streets in the town, chanting slogans against violence targeting media professionals. The protest ended with a rally at the same location.
Speakers at the rally condemned the continued attacks on journalists in Bangladesh, pointing to a pattern of impunity that has persisted across successive governments. They expressed concern that press freedom is being increasingly threatened by both state and non-state actors.
“The repression and intimidation of journalists, which was rampant under the previous government, still continues. Such incidents severely undermine independent journalism,” said one speaker during the event.
The protesters demanded swift legal action against those responsible for the killing of Tuhin, as well as greater protection for journalists across the country. They also urged the interim government to take concrete steps to uphold freedom of expression and ensure media safety, especially in the lead-up to the national elections scheduled for early next year.
Among those who addressed the gathering were Khagrachari Press Club President Tarun Bhattacharjee, General Secretary H.M. Prafulla, and Journalists' Union President Shahriar Yunus.
The murder of Tuhin, who was hacked to death on August 7 in Gazipur while allegedly recording a local extortion incident, has sparked outrage among media workers and rights organizations nationally and internationally.
