Ukhiya, July 10 (V7N) – A 15-year-old Rohingya boy was shot and critically injured in Cox’s Bazar's Nayapara Registered Refugee Camp in Teknaf on Wednesday afternoon during an attempted abduction by an armed group.
The victim, Shafiqul Rahman, son of Mohammad Rafiq, resides in Block H of the Nayapara camp. He sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg and is currently undergoing treatment in the surgery ward of Cox’s Bazar General Hospital. He was initially taken to the MSF Hospital in Kutupalong, Ukhiya, before being transferred due to the severity of his condition.
According to local sources, Shafiqul works as a battery-run auto-rickshaw (locally known as "tomtom") driver. Around 1:30 PM on Wednesday, while he was passing through Block I, members of the notorious Nur Kamal-led Rohingya armed group attempted to abduct him. As he tried to escape, the assailants opened fire, striking him in the leg.
Nearby residents rushed to his aid and quickly transported him to receive medical attention. The incident triggered panic within the camp, which has seen a rise in targeted violence in recent months.
Security forces and local administration have confirmed the incident. In response, law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators. Authorities also stated that regular patrols and surveillance inside the camp have been reinforced to deter further criminal activity.
Efforts to obtain a comment from Teknaf Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Gias Uddin, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls at the time of reporting.
This shooting highlights growing concerns over deteriorating security conditions inside the Rohingya camps, where armed groups and criminal networks continue to operate with increasing boldness despite ongoing security operations.
