Chattogram, July 6 (V7N) – In a significant administrative change, Chattogram Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) will assume management responsibility for the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chattogram Port for an initial period of six months, beginning July 7. The transition marks the end of Saif Powertec Limited’s management contract, which expires on July 6.

Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, described the move as a "historic change" and expressed optimism that the new management will help reduce corruption, dismantle port-based syndicates, improve operational efficiency, and increase revenue generation at the terminal.

The interim government decided not to renew the contract with Saif Powertec Limited following concerns about the terminal's operations. CDDL, a state-owned company operating under the Bangladesh Navy since December 2015, was originally established under Bangladesh Steel & Engineering Corporation to provide repair and maintenance services for vessels calling at Chattogram Port.

Under direct procurement, CDDL will manage the NCT for six months. Azad Majumder noted that if the management transition proves successful, involvement of international operators in the terminal's management could be considered in the future.

The New Mooring Container Terminal is a key facility at Chattogram Port, Bangladesh’s principal seaport handling about 92 percent of the country’s import and export trade. Built at a cost of approximately Tk 737 crore (around $90 million), the terminal features a 1,000-meter-long berth and extensive backup facilities spread over 65 acres. It was constructed to meet growing demands due to increased containerization in maritime trade and commenced operations in May 2007. Saif Powertec had managed the terminal since its inception.

The transition to CDDL’s management is expected to bring new energy and transparency to the terminal’s operations, a vital component of Bangladesh’s trade infrastructure.
