Islamabad, August 6 (V7N) — On Tuesday marked two years since former Prime Minister of Pakistan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was imprisoned, a date the party has observed as a “Black Day” (Ayam-e-Siyah). PTI members and supporters held protests under the slogan “Free Imran,” vowing to carry out their demonstration programs at any cost.

Despite Section 144 being imposed in the capital Islamabad and Rawalpindi—prohibiting public gatherings—PTI leaders announced that their planned protests would proceed. The party’s leadership has finalized their protest strategy, according to senior PTI sources.

As part of the campaign, PTI members of the National Assembly and Senate gathered outside the Adiala Jail gate in Rawalpindi, where Imran Khan is currently incarcerated. The demonstration was led by Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, with organizational support from PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja.

The party also organized parallel peaceful protests in various regions across Pakistan, including Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as in Azad Kashmir. PTI called on its supporters to gather in their respective areas and voice their demands for Imran Khan’s immediate release.

This latest wave of protests comes amid growing criticism from human rights organizations and international observers over Pakistan’s treatment of opposition figures and the curtailment of political freedoms. Since Khan’s ouster from office in 2022 and subsequent arrest, PTI has alleged that his imprisonment is politically motivated, intended to sideline him from future electoral participation.

Authorities have responded with tightened security and restrictions in key cities, particularly around sensitive zones like government buildings and detention facilities. Nevertheless, PTI’s defiance signals its continued public support and determination to challenge the current political establishment.

The day’s events were largely peaceful, although tension remains high. Observers expect further calls for demonstrations if Khan’s legal situation remains unchanged.
