Dhaka, July 26 (V7N) — Intifada Bangladesh, a local organization, held a mass protest in Dhaka’s Shapla Chattar on Friday after Jumuʿa prayers, calling for the banning of all operations of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Bangladesh.
Organizers claimed that the OHCHR was brought into Bangladesh to prevent justice against leaders of the Awami League, particularly “Yunus Sahib,” allegedly sheltering them from capital punishment. They argued that no circumstances in Bangladesh justified the establishment of a UN human rights office and demanded that its activities be banned immediately.
Speakers at the rally warned that the commission could soon transform into one that brings death rather than rights. They cited examples in the Arab world and accused the United States of promoting internal conflict in Bangladesh through international organizations.
Prominent among the speakers was Enayetullah Abbasi, who addressed the crowd as chief guest. Protesters marched through the streets bearing banners, placards, and shouting slogans critical of the UN body. The rally concluded with a procession from Shapla Chattar.
