Feb 12, (V7N) – At least nine people were injured Wednesday afternoon in a clash between activists of BNP and an independent candidate in the West Gate area behind Joypurhat Government College.

Police said the confrontation broke out around 4:30 p.m. when independent candidate Sabekun Nahar (Shikha), contesting with the horse symbol in Joypurhat-1, arrived with supporters. An altercation ensued with activists of BNP candidate Masud Rana Pradhan, who is running with the paddy sheaf symbol.

Nahar alleged her supporters were harassed and attacked at the college gate, leaving several injured, including her brother-in-law. BNP leaders countered that Nahar had brought outsiders from Faridpur and was involved in vote buying, claiming her supporters initiated the violence.

The injured—identified as Al Hamza, Tanjid, Sohag, Rohan, Abdullah, Toufiq Hossain, Roman Hossain, Rajib Hossain, and Al Amin—are receiving treatment at Joypurhat General Hospital. Superintendent Dr. Rashed Mubarak Jewel said all were given primary care and are now out of danger.

Joypurhat Sadar Police Station OC Anisur Rahman confirmed awareness of the incident but said no formal complaint had yet been filed.
