Dhaka, July 27 (V7N) — Police in Dhaka have detained five individuals, including a student organization leader, in connection with an alleged extortion attempt targeting former reserved seat parliamentarian Shammi Ahmed. The arrests took place Saturday evening at a flat on Road No. 83 in the capital’s Gulshan area, a residential and diplomatic zone.
According to Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station, the primary suspect has been identified as Riyad, a Dhaka Metropolitan leader of the student group known as Students Against Discrimination (SAD). The identities of the remaining four detainees have not yet been disclosed.
Preliminary police reports suggest that the group first visited the residence of Shammi Ahmed on July 17 and allegedly demanded Tk 50 lakh. During that visit, they reportedly received Tk 10 lakh. When the group returned on July 27 to collect the remaining Tk 40 lakh, police apprehended them at the scene.
“They were apprehended on the spot during their second visit. Legal action is now underway,” said OC Rahman.
While no formal case had been filed as of Saturday night, law enforcement officials confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to determine whether others were involved and to uncover the motive behind the demand.
The incident has raised broader concerns regarding the misuse of student affiliations for potential political or financial coercion. Authorities are expected to provide further details as the investigation progresses.
