Gazipur, August 9 (V7N) — Police have arrested four individuals, including a couple, in connection with the brutal killing of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin, who was stabbed to death in broad daylight in Gazipur’s Chandna Chowrasta area. The arrests were made on Friday night following a swift investigation aided by CCTV footage from a nearby establishment.
The suspects have been identified as Md. Mizan, also known as Ketu Mizan, his wife Golapi, Md. Swadhin, and Al-Amin. According to police officials, all four are affiliated with a known robbery gang active in the area. Surveillance footage confirmed their involvement in the fatal attack, showing clear evidence of their participation in the crime.
Three separate police teams conducted simultaneous operations to capture the suspects. Around 10:00 PM on Friday, Mizan and his wife Golapi were apprehended from Bhabanipur in Gazipur Sadar Upazila. Swadhin was arrested from the outskirts of Gazipur city, while Al-Amin was picked up later the same night from the Turag area of Dhaka, around 11:30 PM.
These arrests followed earlier detentions on Thursday night, when police launched a series of raids across Gazipur and took five individuals into custody for questioning related to the same case.
The victim, Asaduzzaman Tuhin, aged 38, was a staff reporter for the daily Dainik Protidiner Kagoj. He hailed from Vhatipara village in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh but had been residing in Gazipur’s Chandna Chowrasta area with his family.
The murder occurred around 8:30 PM on Thursday. According to witnesses and CCTV evidence, Tuhin was ambushed by a group of five to six men wielding sharp weapons. He attempted to flee and sought refuge inside a tea stall at the Eidgah Market. The attackers followed him inside and began stabbing him indiscriminately. He died on the spot due to multiple fatal injuries. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.
On Friday morning, Tuhin’s elder brother Selim filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at the local police station.
Speaking to reporters, Taherul Haque Chowhan, Additional Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (Crime Division), confirmed the arrests and emphasized that efforts to capture other suspects were ongoing. “We are conducting continuous operations in various locations. All individuals involved in the murder will be brought to justice,” he stated.
Tuhin’s killing has sparked outrage and deep concern among journalists and civil society members, raising questions about the growing threat to press freedom and safety in Bangladesh. Media watchdogs and rights organizations have called for a transparent investigation and swift justice.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have indicated that further arrests are likely in the coming days.
