Dhaka, Nov 08 (V7N) — Police used sound grenades and water cannons to disperse a group of teachers protesting at Shahbagh in the capital on Saturday afternoon (November 8). The demonstrators were demanding the implementation of three key points, including the upgrade of their salary to the 10th grade.

Clashes broke out when teachers attempted to break through police barricades, prompting law enforcement to respond. Several teachers and journalists were reportedly injured, while protesters claimed that some individuals were detained.

The teachers accused police of launching an unprovoked attack, calling for those responsible to be identified and brought to justice. They warned that if their demands are not met, primary education across the country could be brought to a standstill.

Leaders of the Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council, which organized the protest, said their next course of action will be decided after discussions with central leaders. They reaffirmed that their movement will continue until the demands are fulfilled.

Earlier in the day, teachers had been staging a continuous sit-in at the Shaheed Minar, from where the council announced a ‘pen immersion’ program to press home their three-point demand, including the 10th-grade salary scale.
