Gazipur, August 9 (V7N) — A murder case has been filed over the brutal killing of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin, who was hacked to death after reportedly filming a violent public assault in Gazipur. Police have detained five individuals in connection with the incident.
According to Shahin Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Basan Police Station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police, the suspects are currently being interrogated. However, their names and identities have not been disclosed due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
He stated that none of the detained individuals were seen in the CCTV footage from the scene. They were taken into custody based on preliminary suspicion.
Earlier, the victim’s brother, Selim Mia, filed a murder case at Basan Police Station against 20 to 25 unidentified persons.
The incident occurred around 8 PM on Thursday near the Chandana Mosque Market area in Gazipur city. Tuhin was attacked in public with sharp weapons, reportedly for filming an earlier incident in which a man was being assaulted and hacked in broad daylight.
Local sources confirmed that Tuhin, known for his coverage of crime and public interest stories, had taken video footage of the prior assault, which may have led to his murder. The footage has not yet been released publicly.
Police said they are reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas and are working to identify all those involved. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation and stated that no one connected to the crime will be spared.
Tuhin's murder has sparked outrage among local journalist communities, who are demanding swift justice and increased protection for media professionals working in the field. National journalist organizations have condemned the killing and called for the government to take strong action against those responsible.
The body of Asaduzzaman Tuhin was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Police say the investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new information emerges.
