DHAKA, Feb 19, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman today called upon citizens to observe International Mother Language Day and Martyrs’ Day on February 21 with due respect and solemnity.

In a statement, he recalled the historic 1952 language movement when students of East Pakistan defied authorities to demand Bangla as a state language. “The nation will forever remember with profound respect their supreme sacrifice in establishing the dignity of the Bangla language. I pray to Almighty Allah for the eternal peace of their departed souls,” he said.

Rahman noted that February 21 is now recognized globally as International Mother Language Day, symbolizing international respect for the language martyrs. He stressed the need to ensure Bangla’s rightful place in state and social life, and to intensify efforts to protect the country’s linguistic and cultural heritage.

The Jamaat chief said the day comes as a new government under BNP leadership has taken office, but alleged that remnants of “fallen fascism” are still attempting to destabilize the country. He urged unity to resist conspiracies and expressed hope that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government would uphold democracy, rule of law, human rights, voting rights and freedom of expression.

He emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to guarantee citizens’ security, dignity and freedom of movement. On the occasion, he called upon Jamaat chapters and the nation to mark February 21 with discussions and prayers.
