Dhaka, Feb 17 (V7N) — The National Citizen Party (NCP) has said the 11-party alliance will refrain from taking any oath as members of the proposed Constitutional Reform Council, citing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)’s decision not to do so under the existing legal framework.
The party’s spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan made the statement in a post on his verified social media account on Tuesday.
According to Bhuiyan, since BNP lawmakers did not take the oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council in line with the law, the 11-party alliance would also not proceed with any such oath at this stage.
In an earlier post before issuing the statement, he wrote, “The journey of the new parliament began on the first day of the referendum by showing the thumbs up. Now it is the turn of the opposition party to see the decision.”
The reaction came shortly after Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP lawmaker from Cox’s Bazar-1, announced on behalf of the party that its elected representatives would not take the oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council until the body is formally incorporated into the constitution.
The latest development signals a coordinated stance among opposition-aligned parties, adding a new dimension to the evolving political dynamics surrounding the proposed council and the functioning of the newly formed parliament.
