Savar, July 4 (V7N) – In remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for democracy during various July uprisings in Bangladesh's history, the Dhaka North District unit of chatra Dal organized a solemn candlelight vigil and national anthem performance on Thursday night. The event took place in front of Joy Restaurant in Nabinagar, Savar, aiming to commemorate the martyrs whose lives were lost in the struggle for democratic rights.

During the gathering, speakers reflected on the historical significance of the July movements and the sacrifices made by student activists throughout different political struggles in the country’s history. They drew parallels between past uprisings and recent events, emphasizing the continuity of student leadership in democratic resistance.

Speakers referenced major milestones, such as the 1969 mass uprising led by student martyr Asad, and the 1990 anti-autocracy movement which succeeded under the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia. They noted that the recent pro-democracy movement of 2024 also demanded a high price, including the lives of activists like Wasim, Abu Sayeed, and Mughdha.

Addressing the event, Dhaka North District chatra Dal General Secretary Mahfuz Iqbal said, “For the past fifteen years, Bangladesh has been under fascist rule. In response, a new generation of nationalist youth has risen. Despite suppression of free expression, the youth led the 2024 uprising. Although it began with ordinary students, chatra Dal soon took the lead on the streets. More than a hundred of our members have become martyrs, with countless others subjected to torture and repression. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten.”

President of the Dhaka North District chatra Dal, Mohammad Tamiz Uddin, said, “The July uprising symbolizes our spirit of sacrifice. The BNP family has always stood by the families of those injured or killed in the movement. We continue to provide medical and financial support to them.”

He also criticized unnamed political factions for attempting to take credit for the July uprising without having shown any real support for the victims’ families. “These opportunistic groups have no record of offering help—they are only blinded by the pursuit of power,” he said. The event concluded with prayers for the souls of the martyrs and wishes for the recovery of those injured.

Among those present were chatra Dal Dhaka North District President Mohammad Tamiz Uddin, General Secretary Mahfuz Iqbal, Organizing Secretary Manjurul Haque Sourav, and Joint General Secretary Sujon Sikder, along with leaders from various local units.
