Dhaka, July 10 (V7N) — Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has admitted responsibility for crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 movement.

Al-Mamun made the confession today at the International Crimes Tribunal-1, presided over by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar.

He stated in court, “The allegations of murder and genocide against us during the July-August movement are true. I plead guilty in this incident. I want to present details of the crimes committed during the movement as a witness and assist the court in unveiling the truth.”

The tribunal accepted his application to serve as a witness in the ongoing proceedings.

Meanwhile, the tribunal has ordered the formal indictment of former Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun in the case of crimes against humanity. Their trials have officially commenced.

Al-Mamun’s lawyer, Zayed Bin Amjad, who is also a witness in the case, requested adequate security measures for the former IGP. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said the tribunal will issue appropriate orders regarding the security concerns.
