MONGLA, Feb 28, (V7N) - State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam, inaugurated a canal re-excavation project in Mongla on Saturday afternoon. The initiative, covering four canals in Madurpalta area of Mithakali Union, is expected to bring significant changes to local livelihoods.
Speaking as chief guest, the minister emphasized the importance of canal re-excavation and tree planting as climate adaptation measures. He announced that 50 million trees will be planted nationwide in the first year of the government, and 250 million over five years, creating green employment for 350,000 people. He also pledged alternative employment opportunities along the Sundarbans coast, which faces high risks from climate change.
The re-excavation is being carried out under the Nabpallab project of development organization CNRS, covering Madurpalta Canal, Bhola River, Palerkhand Canal, and Benirkhand Canal. The 8.5-kilometer project, costing Tk 50 lakh, is scheduled for completion by March.
The inauguration ceremony included ribbon-cutting, balloon release, and symbolic soil excavation by the minister. He was joined by Upazila Executive Officer Sharmin Akhter Sumi, ASP Md. Refatul Islam, Upazila BNP President A. Mannan Howlader, and General Secretary Abu Hossain Poni, among others.
Officials and locals expressed optimism that the project will improve water flow, agriculture, and fisheries, while the tree planting program will strengthen resilience against climate impacts and provide sustainable livelihoods.
