PABNA, Feb 28, (V7N) - The brutal killing of Sufia Begum (70) and her granddaughter Jamila Akhtar (15) in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna remains unsolved more than 14 hours after the incident, leaving the entire village in shock. Police say investigations are ongoing, but the motive and perpetrators are still unclear.
The murders took place in Bhabanipur Uttarpara village of Dashuria union sometime after midnight on Friday. Locals reported hearing cries from the victims’ home but did not intervene out of fear. On Saturday morning, Sufia’s body was found at the entrance of her house, while Jamila’s naked body was discovered in a nearby mustard field. Police suspect Jamila was raped before being hacked to death, and her grandmother killed when she tried to resist the attackers.
Family members and neighbors expressed disbelief, saying the victims had no known enemies or disputes. Jamila, a tenth-grade student at Kalikapur Dakhil Madrasa and a Hafez, was described as a bright and devout girl. Relatives demanded justice, with her aunt Kursi Khatun stating: “My sister was hacked to death, and my granddaughter was brutally tortured. I want death for those who did this.”
Police and CID teams inspected the scene, and the bodies were sent to Pabna General Hospital for autopsy. Ishwardi Circle ASP Pranab Kumar confirmed initial evidence of rape, while Superintendent of Police Anwar Zahid called the incident “heinous” and vowed to bring the culprits to justice.
The murders have cast a pall of grief over Bhabanipur village, with residents demanding swift action. Authorities say multiple police wings are working with different leads, but the mystery of who committed the crime and why remains unresolved.
