New Delhi, Feb 19 (V7N) — India and France have taken a significant step in defense and aerospace cooperation by launching a joint assembly line for the H-125 helicopter, a high-performance aircraft designed for operations in mountainous and remote areas.
The facility was inaugurated in India’s Karnataka state by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron during Macron’s three-day visit to the country.
The helicopter will be jointly produced by Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems, marking the first time India will assemble an aircraft capable of operating at extremely high altitudes domestically.
High-Altitude Capability
The H-125, developed by Airbus, is known for its ability to fly at altitudes comparable to Mount Everest, making it suitable for rescue missions, surveillance, and cargo transport in difficult terrain.
According to officials, the helicopter:
-
Can carry at least six passengers
-
Operates at altitudes of around 23,000 feet
-
Has a top speed of about 259 km/h
-
Offers a range of roughly 651 kilometers
Powered by a robust turbine engine, the aircraft is widely used worldwide for emergency medical services, law enforcement, and high-altitude operations.
Strategic Partnership
Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi said the project reflects India’s growing aerospace manufacturing capability and highlighted plans to export the helicopter globally. He described the India-France partnership as one that “extends from the deep sea to the highest mountains.”
The assembly line is part of broader bilateral cooperation, with more than 20 agreements signed during Macron’s visit, spanning defense, space, and civilian sectors.
Analysts say the initiative will strengthen India’s indigenous defense production while deepening strategic ties between the two countries.
