Yangon, July 03 (V7N) — Bangladesh has made history by qualifying for the finals of the Women’s Asian Cup for the first time, thanks to a brilliant brace from star forward Rituparna Chakma against hosts Myanmar. The 2-1 victory not only secured the team’s second consecutive win in the qualifiers but also sealed their place in the prestigious tournament to be held in Australia in March 2026.
The entire squad and coaching staff were overwhelmed with joy at achieving the goal they set before departing for Myanmar. But the journey doesn’t end here—Rituparna and her teammates now face even bigger challenges, with opportunities to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics within reach.
The Road Ahead
The Asian Cup finals will feature 12 teams, divided into three groups of four. The group champions, runners-up, and the two best third-placed teams will move on to the quarter-finals, followed by semi-finals and the final.
-
The top four teams (semi-finalists) will qualify directly for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
-
The four losing quarter-finalists will compete in playoffs; two winners will also secure World Cup spots.
-
The remaining two will head to the intercontinental playoffs for a final shot at World Cup qualification.
Similarly, a strong run beyond the group stage could give Bangladesh a chance at Olympic qualification for Los Angeles 2028.
A Triumph for SAFF Football?
Bangladesh became the first team to qualify from Group C. Hopes remain high for India and Nepal, who could also join them in the final round—India must beat Thailand, while Nepal faces a similar must-win situation. If successful, three SAFF region teams could contest the Asian Cup, marking a significant milestone for South Asian women's football.
Coach Peter Butler and his charges are now focused on making the most of this opportunity. The nation will be watching with hope as Rituparna and her teammates aim to conquer new heights on the Asian and world stages.
