Washington, July 03 (V7N) — U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order stripping transgender swimmer Leah Thomas of her gold medal and nullifying her records. This follows Trump’s broader policy move after taking office for the second time, banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports across the United States.

Leah Thomas, who made history as the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I women’s swimming championship in 2022, will have her personal achievements erased. Her gold medal from the NCAA women’s 500-yard freestyle event will be rescinded, and her records will no longer stand in official listings.

Trump’s administration argues that the order is aimed at ensuring “fairness in women’s sports.” The decision has reignited a heated national debate over transgender participation in athletics.

Thomas, who previously competed in men’s swimming where she was ranked 462nd, rose to the top of women’s rankings after transitioning and competing in the women’s category. Her success sparked controversy, with several female swimmers and advocacy groups alleging unfair advantage and calling for policy changes.

Critics of Trump’s move say the order undermines the rights and dignity of transgender athletes, while supporters claim it protects fairness in women’s competitions.

The executive order is expected to face legal challenges from civil rights organizations.
