MURADNAGAR, July 31 (V7N) — At least 30 people, including six journalists, were injured on Wednesday afternoon in violent clashes between supporters of government advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan and BNP activists in Muradnagar upazila.
The confrontation began near Allahu Chattar in the Muradnagar municipal area, where supporters of Asif Mahmud were holding a protest rally in response to a recent TV report criticizing him and his father, Bilal Hossain. Simultaneously, BNP's student wing, Chatra Dal, was demonstrating nearby to protest against a local leader’s arrest.
Tensions escalated after bricks and stones were allegedly thrown from the district council market area, triggering a chase and counter-chase between both groups. Several shops closed as panic spread across the upazila.
Among the injured were journalists Abdullah Al Maruf (Star News), Shah Imran (Khola Kagoj), Mohin Naser Khan Rafi (Barta24), Habibur Rahman Munna, Mahfuz Anwar Sourabh, and SA TV cameraman Md. Bappi.
Civil society figure Minazul Haque blamed BNP activists for initiating the violence, claiming over 50 of their supporters were injured. In contrast, BNP’s Kamal Uddin accused Awami League and NCP activists of launching an unprovoked attack during Chatra Dal’s preparations for a rally. One severely injured BNP Jubo Dal member, Omar Ullah, was admitted to Comilla General Hospital.
Muradnagar Police Inspector (Investigation) Amin Kader Khan confirmed the incident and said the situation was brought under control after police intervention. Additional forces were deployed, but no official complaints have been filed as of yet. Police say action will follow pending investigation.
