Rajshahi, July 9 (V7N) – Several key areas in Rajshahi city, including Alupotti, Zero Point, Rajshahi Collegiate School, Gonokpara, Rani Bazar Mor, and Rajshahi Medical College Gate, have been overtaken by illegal encroachers, causing significant public disturbance and traffic congestion. The footpaths are now occupied by a range of vendors selling everything from fruits and snacks to footwear, furniture, and restaurant items. In some cases, the main roads, particularly around Sahab Bazar and Rajshahi Medical College Gate, have also been partially blocked, severely affecting traffic flow and pedestrians’ safety.

The encroachments are so severe that even Lakshmipur, one of the most congested areas, has seen the roads and footpaths completely crowded with vendors. Due to the ongoing chaos, patients visiting the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital are suffering from unbearable traffic jams, further complicating their access to healthcare services. Even less busy areas of the city are not free from encroachment. Small shops, food carts, and goods displayed on the footpaths force pedestrians to walk on the main roads, putting them at risk of accidents, especially elderly individuals and women.

In addition to the vendors, construction materials for buildings are being dumped recklessly on the footpaths, further hindering the movement of the public and contributing to the city’s disorganized appearance.

Allegations of Corruption and Political Backing
There are growing allegations that local political leaders, influential figures, and some corrupt traffic police officers are directly involved in facilitating this illegal occupation in exchange for bribes. As a result, authorities have found it increasingly difficult to clear these encroachments. Although there have been sporadic, token eviction drives, the situation returns to normal within days. This is primarily because there is no alternative arrangement for the displaced vendors, and unless these individuals are provided with relocation options, the problem will persist.

Need for a Sustainable Solution
Local citizens and concerned groups in Rajshahi have demanded a permanent solution to the problem. To address the issue, they argue that there is a need for political will and consistent, strict enforcement from the authorities. Rather than conducting symbolic eviction drives, the administration must take substantial action to remove these encroachments and prevent future recurrence. The relocation or rehabilitation of displaced vendors is also crucial. Without this, eviction campaigns are bound to fail.

Furthermore, action must be taken against those influential figures and corrupt police officers who are facilitating these illegal activities. Law enforcement must act swiftly to establish strict deterrents, sending a clear message that such encroachments will no longer be tolerated. Opening up footpaths for pedestrians, reducing traffic congestion, and improving the overall public infrastructure are essential for the well-being of the city's residents.
