Dhaka, July 3 (V7N) — The Bangladesh government has officially designated August 5 as “July Mass Uprising Day”, declaring it a public holiday each year. The decision was announced yesterday by the Cabinet Division via a gazette notification and circular, categorizing the day under Section “Ka” of national and international observances.
In the same announcement, the Cabinet Division declared that August 8, previously marked as “New Bangladesh Day,” will no longer be observed. Instead, July 16 will now be celebrated as “July Martyrs’ Day”, following deliberations by the advisory council earlier.
Earlier on June 25, the Cabinet Division had issued circulars renaming key dates: making August 5 “July Mass Uprising Day,” August 8 “New Bangladesh Day” (to commemorate the interim government formed under Dr Muhammad Yunus), and July 16 “Martyr Abu Saeed Day” in memory of Abu Saeed, who was killed during protests in Rangpur. However, those decisions drew objections from various groups.
In response to the public outcry, the government withdrew the previous circulars and issued fresh gazette notifications, revising the national holiday calendar to reflect these changes.
