Netrakona, July 6 (V7N) — A land dispute in Dattagram village under Sahata Union, Barhatta upazila, has led to serious allegations of property destruction, theft, and intimidation, sparking concern among local residents.
Victims Santosh Nandi and Bappi Nandi allege that their neighbor, Jadab Chandra Sarkar, forcibly entered their property, cut down mango, betel nut, and rain trees, demolished a house, and looted fish from their family pond. The Nandi family also reports ongoing threats and verbal abuse, which have left them living in fear.
Although the family sought resolution through local arbitration, they say no agreement was reached.
In his defense, Jadab Chandra Sarkar told Voice7news that the land in question is legally his through inheritance. “We asked them to vacate the land, but they didn’t. So we removed the structure ourselves. The trees and fish are on our land, and therefore ours,” he stated.
Local law enforcement response has been limited. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barhatta Police Station was unreachable due to his phone being sent for repair. Duty Officer Mostafizur Rahman confirmed there is no Investigating Officer currently assigned and that no formal complaint has been submitted. “If we receive a written complaint, we will take appropriate action,” he said.
Concern is growing in the community that such unresolved disputes could escalate further if left unchecked.
