Dhaka, Feb 16 (V7N) — The Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has congratulated BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman in advance as the country’s future prime minister, describing their meeting on Sunday as a “historic moment” in national politics.

Shafiqur Rahman made the remarks in a Facebook post after Tarique Rahman visited his residence in the Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital on Sunday evening.

In his post, Shafiqur Rahman said Tarique Rahman had come to his residential office, calling the visit a significant milestone for the country’s political landscape. He welcomed the visit and expressed hope that through dialogue and responsible engagement, it would mark the beginning of a new chapter of political maturity and mutual respect.

The Jamaat chief said he envisions a Bangladesh free from fascism, sovereign, and founded on justice and fairness. He added that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, in alliance with the 11-party coalition, is committed to establishing a prosperous, stable and modern state guided by democratic values and constitutional governance.

Regarding the discussion, he said Tarique Rahman assured him that effective measures would be taken to prevent post-election violence and any attacks on opposition activists and minority communities. Shafiqur Rahman welcomed the assurance and expressed the expectation that no citizen should face intimidation or insecurity.

He further stated that on matters of national interest, Jamaat would extend full cooperation to the elected government. However, as an ideological opposition party, it would remain uncompromising in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities. The party would support government initiatives aimed at public welfare but would speak out wherever accountability is required. “Our objective is not confrontation but correction; not obstruction but oversight,” he wrote.

The Jamaat Ameer also said that the people of the country expect a parliament that safeguards justice and civil rights while ensuring stability and progress.

Earlier, around 7:00 pm, Tarique Rahman arrived at the Jamaat chief’s residence. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, and Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Abdullah Mohammad Taher were present at the meeting.
