RAJSHAHI, March 2, (V7N) - Eight suspected robbers were captured and beaten by villagers in Palashi village, Puthia Upazila of Rajshahi on Sunday afternoon. One of them, Md. Shaheen (55) of Maria village in Durgapur, later died, while seven others were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMC) with serious injuries.

According to police, the gang arrived with a truck and indigenous weapons, preparing for a robbery. Villagers caught them around 1:30 pm, tied them up, and assaulted them. Police rescued the men on Monday morning after receiving information.

Puthia Police Station OC Faridul Islam confirmed the death of Shaheen and said the others are undergoing treatment. RMC spokesperson Dr. Shankar Kumar Biswas reported that six are in Ward 4 and one in Ward 8, all in stable condition.

Police said an autopsy will be conducted at the RMC morgue before handing over Shaheen’s body to relatives. Legal action will follow after consultation with senior officials.

The incident has sparked tension in the area, with villagers insisting they acted to protect themselves from organized robbery attempts. Authorities are investigating both the robbery plan and the mob violence that ensued.
