Gazipur, Mar 19 (V7N) — Traffic congestion has intensified on the Dhaka–Tangail Highway and Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway as travelers rush home ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Since Thursday morning, vehicles have been stuck in long queues, stretching up to 10 kilometers in the Chandra Trimor area of Gazipur.
Transport officials said the congestion is caused by high traffic pressure, frequent boarding and alighting of passengers, haphazard parking, and auto-rickshaws traveling in the wrong direction. Overnight rain has left waterlogged and muddy patches on several stretches, further slowing traffic.
Vehicles were also moving slowly in key areas along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, including Abdullahpur, Tongi, Board Bazar, Bhogra Bypass, and Chandana Chowrasta. Congestion has worsened in these locations due to roadside parking and frequent passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.
Passengers reported significant hardships, with many forced to travel in trucks and pickups after failing to get regular transport. There have also been complaints about transport companies charging extra fares during the Eid rush.
Police said the start of the holiday season in ready-made garment factories has led to workers and people from various professions traveling home simultaneously. Additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed at key points along the highways to manage traffic and reduce delays.
The situation highlights the annual challenges of holiday travel in Bangladesh, with millions leaving Dhaka to celebrate Eid with their families across the country.
