Dhaka, Feb 27 (V7N) — Bangladesh has experienced a series of earthquakes recently, raising concern among experts and the public. Last November, an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale was felt in various parts of the country, including the capital Dhaka. The government reported at least 10 deaths, hundreds of injuries, and structural damage to buildings in multiple districts. Since then, several tremors have been felt across the country, with February alone recording at least nine earthquakes.

Seismologists have long warned that Bangladesh is at risk due to accumulated tectonic pressure in the region. The last major earthquake in the area occurred in 1930. Experts say that as pressure builds up underground, there is a high possibility of one or more significant earthquakes in the near future. They recommend following international safety guidelines and constructing buildings according to approved earthquake-resistant codes.

Safety Guidelines for Earthquake Preparedness

Before an Earthquake:

  • Identify safe spots inside and outside your home or workplace, away from tall furniture or heavy objects.

  • Keep a torch, dry food, and a first-aid kit accessible.

  • Secure gas and electrical appliances, and know how to turn them off.

  • Hang pictures and mirrors away from beds and seating areas.

  • Practice emergency evacuation drills regularly.

During an Earthquake Indoors:

  • Use the “drop, cover, and hold on” method; take shelter under sturdy furniture.

  • Protect your head with a helmet, pillow, or hands.

  • Stay away from glass windows and exterior walls.

  • In multi-story buildings, remain inside until the shaking stops.

  • After the quake, use stairs instead of elevators to exit safely.

During an Earthquake Outdoors:

  • Move to an open area, away from buildings, hills, trees, and power lines.

  • Avoid standing under light posts or near heavy structures.

  • If in a moving vehicle, park safely in an open area; do not stop on bridges or near tall buildings.

After an Earthquake:

  • Be prepared for aftershocks.

  • Check yourself and others for injuries and move to a safe location if buildings are damaged.

  • If gas leaks or sparks are detected, evacuate immediately and take necessary precautions.

  • Keep a battery-operated radio and mobile phone handy to receive updates.

  • Maintain contact with emergency services and have fire control measures in place.

If Trapped in Rubble:

  • Avoid lighting fires due to potential gas leaks.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with cloth to avoid dust inhalation.

  • Move slowly, stay calm, and wait for rescue.

Experts emphasize that awareness, preparation, and adherence to safety protocols are crucial in minimizing the risks posed by earthquakes in Bangladesh.
