BAGERHAT, Feb 21, (V7N) - Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam today said extensive changes will be introduced in the management of Mongla Port within the next 180 days.
Speaking to journalists after his first visit to the port since assuming office, the minister emphasized its importance to the national economy and foreign trade. He said existing problems will be identified and discussed with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, with necessary steps taken in line with directives to boost employment, connectivity, and regional growth.
He noted that the government plans to center import and export activities around Mongla Port, fully utilizing the potential of the southwestern region. “If necessary facilities are ensured, Mongla Port will soon transform into a full-fledged and efficient port,” he said.
On questions about suspended development agreements with neighboring countries, the minister said they will be reviewed with national interests as the top priority. Agreements harmful to the country will be thoroughly evaluated before reactivation.
He also announced plans to consider construction of a bridge over the Mongla River and introduce multiple train services on the Mongla–Khulna railway route by adding new coaches and engines.
Earlier, he attended a views-exchange meeting at the Mongla Port Authority conference room, joined by State Minister for Environment Shaikh Faridul Islam, Shipping Secretary Dr Nurun Nahar Chowdhury, and Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman.
