Dhaka, Feb 24 (V7N)- Political administrators appointed to six city corporations, including the two Dhaka city bodies, have officially joined the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD), marking a new phase in urban governance management.

The administrators submitted their joining letters to LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said city corporation elections will be held gradually in line with the tenure of the respective bodies. He added that parliament will decide whether future city elections will be conducted under party symbols.

Focus on Services and Urban Challenges

The newly appointed administrators said they will prioritise improving civic services, particularly mosquito control, easing traffic congestion, repairing damaged roads and curbing corruption. They also pledged to set measurable targets in city corporations that have remained ineffective for a long time and ensure better delivery of services to residents.

State Minister for LGRD Mir Shahe Alam said political leaders were appointed as administrators with the expectation that their public engagement and leadership experience would help address longstanding urban problems more effectively than traditional administrative arrangements.

No Plan for Municipal Political Administrators

Earlier, Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam clarified that the government currently has no plan to appoint political administrators in municipalities, indicating that the present initiative will remain limited to selected city corporations for now.

Background:
The appointment of political administrators comes amid ongoing discussions on the future structure of local government institutions and the timing of city corporation elections, which are expected to be held in stages once the legal and administrative processes are completed.
