Dhaka, Dec 24 (V7N)- Justice Jubair Rahman Chowdhury has been appointed as the 26th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. The Law Ministry issued a notification regarding his appointment on Wednesday (December 24).
According to the notification, the President of Bangladesh, exercising the powers vested under Clause (1) of Article 95 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, appointed Justice Jubair Rahman Chowdhury, currently a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh. The appointment will take effect from the date he takes the oath.
Justice Jubair Rahman Chowdhury is scheduled to take oath on December 28 at Bangabhaban.
As per constitutional provisions, the incumbent Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed will retire on December 27 upon attaining the age of 67 years.
Justice Jubair Rahman Chowdhury began his legal career by enrolling as a lawyer in the Judges’ Court in 1985, followed by his enrollment in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1987. On August 27, 2003, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division, and his position was made permanent two years later. Subsequently, on August 12, 2024, President Mohammad Shahabuddin appointed him as a judge of the Appellate Division.
Academically, Justice Chowdhury completed his LLB (Honours) and LLM degrees from Dhaka University, and later earned a Master’s degree in International Law from the United Kingdom.
His appointment comes at a significant moment for the country’s judiciary, as expectations remain high regarding judicial independence, constitutional governance, and rule of law.
