Chattogram, Sep 13 (V7N) – Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin has said that with the right political leadership, Bangladesh could transform into a “gold mine” within five years.
Speaking as the chief guest at the concluding session of the two-day international conference titled “The Future of Business: Innovation, Technology and Sustainable Development” organized by the Business Research Bureau of Chattogram University at Hotel Radisson Blu on Friday night, Sheikh Bashiruddin emphasized the role of students and knowledge acquisition in filling the country’s shortage of raw materials.
“Allah Almighty has not given anyone a monopoly on knowledge,” he said. “Whoever tries their best can achieve as much as possible. There is no syndicate here.”
The advisor outlined key factors for economic development, including labor productivity, utility proportion, logistical efficiency, cost and access to finance, and access to markets. “If these can be ensured, we can achieve significant economic growth despite shortages in raw materials,” he added.
Sheikh Bashiruddin also stressed the importance of uninterrupted supply in market management. He highlighted the government’s efforts last Ramadan, which ensured a stable supply chain and low prices for daily necessities.
Reflecting on past challenges, he said, “After the mass uprising, many members of the so-called syndicate fled the country, making market management extremely difficult. Through coordinated efforts and the establishment of a democratic business environment, we were able to overcome this.”
He added that under Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the country paid off liabilities of $6 billion from reserves of $10 billion, increasing current reserves to $30 billion.
Commenting on expectations from the future government, Sheikh Bashiruddin said, “Fascist rulers of the last 16 years created cronies who destabilized the market. A democratic and coordinated approach by the next government can strengthen market systems and ensure a balanced distribution of wealth.”
