Dhaka, Aug 27 (V7N) – The government has announced plans to bring new rules for bus operations in the capital, aiming to introduce a single-system service that will enforce strict route discipline and designated stoppages. The move is intended to reduce traffic congestion, passenger harassment, and fare irregularities.

The Press Wing of the Chief Advisor’s Office revealed the initiative in a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Tuesday (August 26) night.

According to the statement, Dhaka’s bus transport system has long been running without effective regulation, resulting in widespread public suffering. Commuters are regularly subjected to overcrowding, fare fraud, unsafe boarding practices, and frequent accidents. While younger passengers often manage to push their way onto buses, the system is particularly harsh for women, children, and the elderly.

The press wing cited studies showing that ineffective bus routes are a major contributor to traffic congestion, costing the economy an estimated Tk 37,000 crore annually and wasting 3.2 million working hours every day.

Explaining the importance of the reform, the statement noted:

  • Bus services will become more disciplined, efficient, and safer.

  • Passengers will no longer have to fight for seats or face fare manipulation.

  • Travel across Dhaka will be faster, easier, and more comfortable for millions of daily commuters.

The government expects that this new framework will significantly improve safety, comfort, and efficiency in Dhaka’s public transport system, while also easing the city’s chronic traffic gridlock.
