Dhaka, July 26 (V7N) – Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul, Legal Advisor to the interim government, has said that when there is no fear of losing power through elections, governments become authoritarian. “If power does not change through elections, the government turns monstrous — Sheikh Hasina is a clear example of that,” he stated.

He made these remarks as the chief guest at the 11th Human Rights Conference organized by the Human Rights Society at Dhaka University on Saturday afternoon.

Highlighting the current state of human rights in the country, Professor Nazrul said, “Protecting human rights has become one of the biggest challenges today. The government is attempting to suppress rights under the guise of legal reforms.”

He stressed the importance of embedding human rights principles into all layers of society — starting from education. “The practice of human rights should begin with the curriculum and extend to every aspect of life,” he said.

Dr. Nazrul also emphasized the limitations of legal reform alone, stating, “Not everything can be achieved through law. Institutional change is essential — and nothing will truly change without a transformation in mindset.”
