Dhaka, July 02 (V7N) — Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has called on the United Nations to formulate effective mechanisms to combat fake news and to extend support to media outlets committed to ethical journalism.

Dr. Yunus made the call during a meeting with UNESCO Bangladesh Office Head Susan Vaiz and Mehdi Benchellah, Senior Project Officer of the Journalists' Safety Branch, at the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday.

“Fake and false news is a major challenge for the government. Some of this misinformation is being spread by individuals outside the country. Both digital platforms and, at times, traditional media are contributing to the problem. The UN should engage with media outlets on this issue,” said the Chief Adviser.

UNESCO’s Susan Vaiz noted that self-regulation would feature prominently in a report to be released Thursday, containing recommendations aligned with international standards.

Mehdi Benchellah added that the report would also address the working conditions of journalists and the safety of women journalists, which he described as globally significant concerns.
