New York, Sept 25 (V7N) – Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa used his debut appearance at the UN General Assembly’s annual debate to present a forward-looking agenda focused on reform, reconstruction, and national renewal. He emphasized balanced diplomacy, transitional justice, and inclusive representation as Syria seeks to “turn the page of a wretched past.”
A year ago, Al-Sharaa led a rebel group in northwest Syria and conducted a rapid military offensive in late 2024 that toppled the Assad regime in Damascus. Since then, he has pursued a strategy centered on three pillars: balanced diplomacy, security and stability, and economic development.
Al-Sharaa pledged that Syria is now rebuilding through the creation of a new state with institutions and laws that protect the rights of all citizens without exception. Commissions for transitional justice and the investigation of missing persons have been established, and work is ongoing toward electing a legislative council.
Civil and military institutions have been restructured, previous bureaucratic frameworks dissolved, and a “government of competence” formed to strengthen public participation. International relations have been restored, sanctions partially lifted, and major regional and global companies have begun investing in Syria’s market, contributing to reconstruction efforts. Al-Sharaa urged the full lifting of sanctions, stating that they continue to “shackle the Syrian people.”
President Al-Sharaa underscored Syria’s transition from turmoil to renewal, affirming that the country, with its ancient civilization and culture, now aims to be a state governed by law, protecting rights and guaranteeing freedoms. He stressed accountability, noting that fact-finding commissions have been formed to investigate recent sectarian violence, with cooperation extended to UN investigators.
“I guarantee to bring to justice everyone accountable and responsible for bloodshed,” he said.
At the same time, he condemned ongoing Israeli strikes on Syrian territory, calling them threats to regional stability, while reaffirming Damascus’ commitment to the 1974 disengagement of forces agreement and advocating dialogue with the international community.
“In continuation of the Syrian story, I declare before you today the triumph of truth over falsehood,” Al-Sharaa told delegates. “Truth has come, and falsehood has perished. Syria is reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world.”
