New York, Sept 23 (V7N) – U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized the United Nations during his address at the opening session of the 80th UN General Assembly on Tuesday. Speaking for nearly an hour—almost four times longer than his allotted 15 minutes—Trump accused the global body of failing to match its strong statements with concrete action.
Trump argued that despite the UN’s mandate to help end wars worldwide, he has personally shouldered that responsibility. Claiming that during his second term he ended seven wars across the globe, Trump said his efforts had saved millions of lives and deserved recognition. “I should have won the Nobel Prize,” he remarked, while adding that the real prize for him was “ending wars and saving lives.”
The U.S. president went on to mock the UN, saying that in return for his efforts, he received nothing more than a “bad escalator and a teleprompter.” He lamented that the organization had not assisted in halting conflicts, arguing that its vast potential to contribute remained largely untapped.
“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” Trump asked rhetorically. “They have immense potential to contribute in many areas, but they are nowhere near realizing it. Most of the time, they issue strong statements but fail to act on them.”
The speech underscored Trump’s longstanding skepticism toward multilateral institutions and reflected his broader criticism that the UN has not fulfilled its founding purpose of promoting global peace and security.
