Dhaka, June 26 (V7N) – Google Pay, the global digital payment platform by tech giant Google, has officially launched its services in Bangladesh. For now, the service is exclusively available to City Bank cardholders, both Visa and MasterCard users.

In a press release, City Bank announced that its debit and credit card customers can now use Google Pay for both domestic and international transactions. Customers can install the Google Pay app on their Android smartphones and link their cards to start using the service.

Once set up, users can make payments via ‘Tap and Pay’ at NFC-enabled terminals, along with payments for online shopping, app subscriptions, and in-app purchases.

“This marks a significant step forward in the digital payment ecosystem of Bangladesh,” said a senior official at City Bank.

How Google Pay Works:

Google Pay uses NFC (Near Field Communication) technology for contactless transactions. Instead of sharing real card numbers, it generates a virtual account number, ensuring enhanced security during payments.

How to Use Google Pay in Bangladesh:

  1. Download and install the Google Pay app from the Play Store.

  2. Open the app and add your City Bank debit or credit card under the "Add a Card" option.

  3. Complete the verification process.

  4. Once activated, your phone is ready for NFC-based payments.

Limitations and Future Prospects:

Currently, this service is limited to City Bank customers, but industry insiders expect other Bangladeshi banks to join the platform soon. However, NFC infrastructure remains limited across local merchants, which may slow down widespread adoption initially.

Still, the launch of Google Pay in Bangladesh is being viewed as a milestone in the country’s digital financial transformation.
