Nov 18, (V7N) - Five-time World Cup champions Brazil have faced challenges in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, but defender Marquinhos has urged fans to remain supportive ahead of their home clash with Uruguay on Tuesday.
Brazil sits fourth in the standings with 17 points from five wins, four losses, and two draws, trailing leaders Argentina by five points. Uruguay is second with 19 points. The top six teams will qualify directly for the tournament in North America.
Brazil's struggles continued last Thursday with a 1-1 draw against Venezuela, where Vinicius Jr. missed a late penalty. However, Marquinhos, standing in as captain for the injured Danilo, emphasized the pride players feel in representing the national team, even during tough times.
"Even though there are reasons for people to lose hope in the national team, we ask that they never lose their passion," said the 30-year-old during a Sunday news conference.
Under head coach Dorival Junior, Brazil is undergoing a transitional phase, which Marquinhos acknowledged will take time to stabilize.
"This transition is still very new, with changes in players and teams, so mistakes will happen," he said. "But we are improving, and that motivates us."
Despite their current standing, Marquinhos said the team is focused on winning to build confidence and climb the table.
Brazil will face Uruguay without several key players, including defender Eder Militao and forwards Neymar and Rodrygo, who are out with injuries. The last time the teams met, Uruguay defeated Brazil in Montevideo.
